As far as getting a band up and running, it's pretty much always the case that finding bandmates to know how to play their instruments well will be the most important first step on the road to rock stardom. If all one wants to be is in a garage band, it won't be that important, but in almost every other case starting to think like a professional musician will help out a great deal.

What this means is that one is going to have to put in the time needed to find musical gear that won't break the bank but which also will deliver in terms of quality. Going cheap when it comes to things like drums and guitars is a sure path to ultimate failure because they don't sound very well in most cases. For good quality and decent prices, something like an Epiphone electric guitar can't be beat.

One can also start looking for musical gear by hitting garage sales or looking for classifieds. Scoping out an electric guitar for sale through an online ad or auction site is also a good way of finding quality gear a discounted price. If done right, the band will be well on its way to that first paying gig down at the corner bar or some school carnival or the like.

As far as finding any kind of gear, never neglect the local pawn shop, which is an extremely valuable source for musical gear of all kinds. Taking advantage of some other musician's need for a bit of quick cash is an old tradition in the music world and also a way to get some top quality gear like a Yamaha acoustic electric guitar for about a quarter of what it would cost new.

The point in all this is to make sure that one has lined up quality players, that are able to play quality music, and are playing all of that music on quality equipment. It's a fact that all of this can be possible for not a lot of upfront money if one knows what one is doing and is willing to go out there and search the Internet or pound the pavement to find all of that good stuff.

Always remember that even if you found the best guitar in the world, it won't be worth its salt if you aren't putting in the time necessary to learn to play it well. Bands come and go, and many had fantastic gear but they still sounded terrible because they never put in the practice time. Still, you can start up a band for not a lot of money, which will at least entertain you while you're playing out in the garage.

This coincides perfectly with their record label EMI’s scheduled release of 14 of their new digitally enhanced albums which will available in early 2010.

What's even better is that the owners from the video game will be able to exlcusively download the entire Abbey Road album straight to their XBOX/PS3 for about £10. Or alternatively, you can download them individually for about 99p each. I think this is part of a master plan to get the Beatles back into the scene and apply their music to a younger demographic. There is no doubt that these new CD’s will sell like hotcakes in the shops and I bet EMI are licking their lips!

I would like to think of myself as a massive Beatles fan. I am interested to hear how they have re-mastered their tracks. I do hope they have not laid digital pianos over their grand pianos or added a hoard of electric guitars to replace the older sound. Plans on how to get the Beatles’ back catalogue implemented into the digital world has been widely discussed between all the parties involved. The companies will also be offering the infamous album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for sale in November which is definetly going to be huge with fans from all over the world!

Mark Knopfler talks about a Fender Stratocaster

There can't be many people who've not fantasised about becoming a guitar hero. Standing proudly onstage, thrashing out blistering power chords loud enough to make the paint peel from the walls. And there are a number of truly great electric guitars that have stood the test of time.

One of the most famous electric guitars is the Fender Stratocaster. Originally designed back in 1954 the Fender Stratocaster was the guitar of choice for Jimi Hendrix who played left handed. It's also the instrument chosen by the likes of Eric Clapton and Pete Townsend of the Who. The Fender Stratocaster continues to be as popular today as it ever was and a whole new generation of guitarists are discovering this great, iconic instrument.

Another well known and popular electric guitar from Fender is, of course, the Telecaster. This excellent guitar preceded the Stratocaster having been first produced as the Broadcaster in late 1949. There are many talented and well known guitar players who prefer to play Fender Teles. Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones is probably one of the most famous guitarists who chooses to play Telecasters.

If we are talking about classic guitars we must of course mention the fantastic Gibson Les Paul. This is another iconic electric guitar that was first produced back in the 1950s and has been in production ever since. Jimmy Page, of Led Zeppelin and Yardbirds fame, is just one guitarist who chose the Gibson Les Paul. A modern day guitarist who is a great exponent of Les Paul is, of course, Slash of Guns 'n' Roses fame.

Since I've mentioned a couple of Fenders its only fair to mention a couple of great Gibsons. I could have chosen the great Gibson ES335, a classic electric guitar, popular with many guitar greats, but instead I've chosen the exceptional Gibson SG. This distinctive looking solid body electric guitar was introduced in the early 1960s to compete with the popular Fender Strat. This is the guitar used by Angus Young of Australian rock band ACDC for all of their well known rock anthems. This is also the guitar used by the great Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath.

There are just so many great guitars but these four are, without doubt, at the top of the list of great electric guitars of our age.

The Dimebag range from Dean Guitars. While most guitarists have one signature guitar -Pantera and Damageplan's guitarist has had thirty three done in his honour. After his death in 2004 Dean decided not to let the guitarists name go into obsuricty and bought out a large range of Dimebag Darrell guitars. The pickups in the guitar depends on the age -newer ones feature the 'Dimebucker', instead of EMGs. If your after a Dean just choose with pickups you like better and then go for which guitar looks good to you. If Dimebag was your hero, this is the range to look at prices range from the 'dimeblade' at £219 to the 'rebel razorback' at £3500 -so choose wisely.

BC Rich Kerry King Signature series. Also having more than one signature guitar is Slayer Guitarist Kerry King. Available as either a flying V or Explorer shaped guitar as well, painted with tribal designs to match his head tattoos, these guitars look as mean as their owner, but how do they sound? Not bad, they certainly go along way to helping you achieve that harsh 'Slayer' guitar tone.  With BC Rich's special pickups to, you can see that some thought has gone into these guitars.

Jackson guitars Demolition model. Created with help from Machine Head's lead guitarist Phil Demell, the Jackson guitar has one hell of a kick to it. A classic flying V shaped guitar with EMG pickups, this guitar is going to rip your head off the minute you plug it in. Expensive, but to say at the least at £1100, if you have that kind of money I suggest you buy you now -those that dont, sell your organs online to get the money.

• The expense of building it. This wont be cheap -think about the prices of the good wood for the guitar, then the prices of the electronics if building an electric and then the paint job. Then there is the tools you are going to need for the job, cutting out the bodies shape is going to require specialist tools.
• Practice. If your a person whose not had much experiece using wood cutting tools, practice should be a priority. Your not going to be good at this straight away, and you dont really wanna to start on expensive wood, and make a mistake that cant be fixed. So by practicing on cheaper wood will save you time and if you make a mistake, its all part of the learning experience. When you start cutting the body and doing all of the woodwork, you'll be glad you took the time to perfect this stage.
• Wiring. Primaily a point for the electric guitar builders out there, as once youve completed work on the body, you'll get to the electrics. Try very hard not to electrocute yourself, as getting the wiring wrong can do just this. Get a qualified electrician to overview your handywork or do it for you before you put the electrics into the guitar.

These are just a few things to consider, but if thats too much work you can always just buy electric guitars from these guys.

Ludwig Van Beethoven. Famous more for the fact he composed, Beethoven wrote and performed music while being deaf in his later 20s with the use of a sound rod to feel the vibrations. Born at the end of 1770, Beethoven followed in the family tradition of music by working at some point in the court of the Elector of Cologne. The elector financed his move to Vienna in 1792, where we studied the violin and counterpoint. Beethoven started to loss his hearing in 1796 in his twenties, which has been speculated to be the result of lead posioning, due to its high volume of use. The work of Beethoven has been put into three different setions: the early, middle and later periods. His early period work was said to be influenced by mozart (who we'll get to in a minute) and went upto 1806. The middle period went from 1803-1814, and the later period went from 1815 up till his death.

Wolfgang Mozart. Mozart, born in 1756 is thought to be one of the greatest classical composers, with over six hundred pieces wrote and composed to his name. Mozart was considered a child prodigy, playing to royalty and composing from the age of five, and was employed as a court musician at seventeen in Salzburg. After visiting Vienna he deicded to stay on and this is they city where he acheived fame, but little fortune. He died of what is believed to be Rheumatic fever in 1791, and rumour has it he was dictacting music on his deathbed.

Bach. Born in 1865 in Germany, Bach helped to mature the classical subgenre of Baroque, being hugely influential on the genre. During his life he was more famous for being an organist rather than a composer, for which he was only rediscovered in the 19th century and now considered to be one of the best composers of all time. Bach was an orphan at 10 years old and went to live with his brother, who was also a musician -most of Bach's family were. Bach received further musical tution from his Brother, learning the Clavicord. Two Bach's children from his first marriage were influential in the Rococo style that later followed Barquoe: Wilhem and Carl. Bach was hired by Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen as a director of music in his court (1717-1723) during which time Bach was widowed in 1720 and remarried in 1721. In 1723, Bach was appointed Cantor of Thomasschule, a posistion he held until his death in 1750.

• Randy Rhoads. Formely of LA rock band Quiet riot, Randy Rhoads was best know as Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist when the singer went solo from Black Sabbath. Rhoads helped write such classic Ozzy songs as 'Crazy train' and 'Dee'. Randy's classical influence and background can be seen on the first two solo Ozzy albums which he played on. 1979's 'Blizzard of Oz' album and 1981's 'diary of a madmen'. It is believed that Rhoades would've gone on to leave the band to study classical guitar at UCLA, and he would seek out classical guitar tutors on tour with Ozzy to keep up his knowledge and playing skill. The specialist guitars that Jackson had made for him are extremely popular with metal guitar players. Rhoads died tragically in a plane crash in 1982, and his since been an inspiration for thousands of guitarists since.
• Chuck Schulidner. 'Death's main axeman, vocalist and head songwriter. Hailed as the father of the death metal subgenre, a term he himself wasnt comfortable with, Chuck was a huge influence on many guitar players and extreme metal. 'Scream bloody gore', the first album from Death, was the template for the genre known as death metal, but with each album the style and directions changed. Death released four more albums before Schuldiner folded the band in 1999 to play guitar in a new band 'control denied', which released the one album 'the fragile art of exsistance'. Schuldiner lost his battle with cancer in 2001, the metal community had raised money on many occassions to pay for his operations.
• Darrell Lance Abbott -'Dimebag'. The guitar player of Pantera and Damageplan, who also played guitar for the 'rebel meets rebel' project. Pantera was formed in 1981 as a glam metal band, but the bands first album 'Cowboys from hell' saw them take a much more heavier groove laden approach with the music. Thier next album 1992's 'Vulgar display of power' was the band breakthrough album, featuring the songs 'this love','walk', and 'a new level'. The next album 'Far beyond driven' reached the top of the US charts at a time when metal wasnt considered 'popular'. Pantera brought out 2 more albums before a breakdown in communication split the band into two camps, never reconsiling before the guitarists death. Dimebag was tragically shot while performing onstage with Damageplan in December 2004, which saw the metal community grieve as a collective once again.
