You would need to find a local tutor and then organise lessons with them on a regular basis. The main problem of this is that it can be very costly.

To help channel their energy, why not try Christmas karaoke this year? Unlike video games that alienate the young from the old, the whole family can get involved in these seasonal sing-a-longs. Promote your local gigs better

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Promoting your first few gigs as an unsigned band is tough. Your friends are gonna be coming down in the beginning, but dont expect them to keep coming down gig after gig. Here's afew ways to try and advertise your gig.

  • Sticking up posters. A proven way to promote your gig. This will get you going around town to get posters up for the event, making sure no wall is left blank. Other venues rehearsal studios, newsagents, music shops and pubs are all good places to advertise the event. Check with the owner of the place before putting them up, because they'll tear them right down off the wall if they want. Some councils will fine you for putting up posters in the street without permits and then fine the venue -so remember to check when you do it. Which wont go down to well with venue owners.
  • Flyering. Getting flyers made and handing them out isnt the flashiest thing you could be doing, but it needs to be done to let people know about the gig. Not everyone is going to want a flyer, so dont be pushy with it. It can be disheartening, but you've gotta promote the gig.
  • The internet. {The power of the Internet has helped smaller bands greatly, advertise your gigs on many different related forums, Myspace, Facebook groups}{The internet has been a godsend to bands, so advertise on different forums, Myspace, Facebook and anywhere else you can think of}Cyberspace has allowed bands to check in contact with their fans more easily. You can promote your gig via forums and social networks. Getting to know some of the poeple on these forums can also open up new oppotunities and get these people themselves interested in helping your band out, and even coming down. Social websites allow bands to create groups and events and invite people down to them. Not all the people are going to turn up, but at this point its about letting everyone know and slowly building up support. Online some people will claim to turn up but wont in the end, so dont take it too heart if they dont.
  • Getting your gig into the local gig listings. Magazines and papers with gig listings? Somebody reads them, so getting your gig in there is more exsposure about it.

A gig review for the Metallica gig at the O2 arena: March 28th

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Anyone witness the sheerly brutal event that was Metallica at the O2 on March 28th? Its good to see Metallica playing almost all of the new album, as the St anger tour was just them playing the classic songs, with nothing new.

The new Metallica album 'Death Magnetic' is cruelly compared to the classic 'Master of puppets', But maybe this is because it doesnt sound like the other albums. Death magnetic just doesnt have the technicality of 'Justice for all' or the rawness of 'Kill 'em all'. Opening tracks 'that was just worth life' and 'end of the line' feel as if they'd decided to update 'Battery' and the song 'Master of puppets' for a modern audience. The same is true of the album closers 'suicide and redemption' and 'my apocalypse' -its like they wanted to reproduce 'Orion' and 'Damage inc' from Master of puppets. The album surprised alot of people who were ready to to write it off- myself included.
